Showing Grace as a Way of Life: December

Showing Grace as a Way of Life: Pursuing Hearts through Prayer

In one of most practical portions of Scripture on showing grace in our natural spheres of life, Jeremiah calls the people of God to “seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” (Jeremiah 29:7)

Together at OMPC, the past three months we have focused on “seeking the welfare” of our natural spheres of life. Seeking the welfare of the city where we live, work, and play is the best way to begin Showing Grace as a Way of Life.

Our next phase is to pursue hearts within our natural spheres of life. The first and best place to begin pursuing someone’s heart is talking to the Lord about your heart for them! Pray to the Lord on their behalf!

Praying on people’s behalf means we ask God to flourish their lives, their relationships, and their work. You might begin by petitioning God for the needs and desires you already know about. You could even ask someone: “What are your greatest needs and desires right now?” Taking what someone entrusts to you and earnestly praying for their welfare will deepen your care for them and make you more aware of opportunities to pursue their hearts.

In addition to praying for their welfare, ask the Father for wisdom, sensitivity, and savvy to pursue their hearts. God’s Spirit might lead you to affirm their gifts or accomplishments, to speak truth where they are believing lies about themselves, to ask questions to understand them better, or to even tangibly show kindness to a need they are experiencing.

In the sphere of life where you are focusing on showing grace, would you pray by name for the welfare of those God has placed in your path and on your heart?
