I love March Madness. Even when I’m watching a basketball game alone, I’ll catch myself pumping my fist and cheering when the underdog wins. When a basketball game comes down to a last second shot, I’m on the edge of my couch. Even though the winning shot is played over and over again on TV, we all really know that every moment counts. A seemingly pointless free-throw in the beginning of the game could be the ONE POINT that makes the difference between a win and a loss. In a close game, every point counts.
John Piper once said, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life and you may be aware of three.”
This week in The Blue Book (Week 21), we are called to consider stories. When I think of my story, I sometimes think of the “big shot” moments. Don’t you? There are so many big, bullet-point moments that make up my life. There are the scenes that I play and replay over and over in my head. Whether good or bad, sometimes those memories take on a life of their own. But, our lifetimes are made up of a million moments and God is in each one of them.
When we get to heaven, we may not care to look back at our lives. But, if we do, I think we’ll see what God was doing, how he was doing it and, even more amazingly, why he was doing it. Every moment of our story counts and God is in every moment. Does he show up for the big moments? Of course, he does. But he’s in the tiny, little moments, too. He knows the number of hairs on our head, he is our ever-present help in trouble, he cares for the big and the small (Matthew 10).
What are you waiting for? It’s a bit daunting to plug into ministry at a new church, but it’s SO worth it. If you’re new, not-so-new or reconnecting, please consider joining a bible study, a short-term missions trip, a Battle for the Heart group, a team that ministers in Fairfield, our Wednesday prayer group or other great opportunities!
